Why Does The Easter Date Change Every Year?

resurrection-of-jesusChristians, all over the world celebrate Easter Sunday as the day of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, the third day of his crucifixion.

Unlike Christmas, the Easter is celebrated on a different date each year.

According to the Bible, Jesus Christ death and resurrection occurred around the time of Jewish Passover which was celebrated on the first full Moon following the vernal equinox.

How is Easter Sunday decided?

The date of Easter is set around the March equinox.(also called as Vernal Equinox or spring equinox). Equinox literally means equal night. March equinox is usually on 21st of March each year.

The date of Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the March equinox.

Hence, the date of Easter Sunday changes as the day of full moon changes each year after Vernal equinox.

The latest Easter date can be on 26th of April at the most. This will happen if there is a full Moon just before vernal equinox (March 21st) and the full Moon after the equinox happens to be on Monday. There are 29.5 days between each full Moon. So, if the full Moon falls on 22nd March, the next full moon would be on 20th 0f April. And, if this happens to be on Monday, the next Sunday would be on 26th of April that should be Easter Sunday.

The earliest date could be on 22nd March. The previous earliest date was March 22nd 1818 and next Easter on 22nd March will be in the year 2285. The recent earliest date was on 27th March, 2016. But the earliest date of Easter in 21st century was 23rd March of 2008.  It’s because the date of full Moon in that year after march equinox was on 22nd March that fell on Saturday. Hence, Easter Sunday was on 23rd March. The next Easter as early would be on 25th march 2035.

How is Ash Wednesday decided?

Lent season starts from Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. The 40 days lent has always been a metaphor than a literal count. This calculation makes lent last 46 days, if the six Sundays are included, but only 40 days if those six Sundays are excluded, because there is no obligation to fast on the six days during lent.

All Sundays through out the year including lent season are considered as “Little Easters” as Sunday is a resurrection day that has to be celebrated.

All the best, to b thee best.
