Full Moon Names of Each Month in a Year

Each month the Moon goes through its phases from new Moon to full Moon and back again. Full Moon occurs about every 29.5 days. It occurs when the Moon moves to the side of Earth directly opposite the Sun’s rays off its full face and appearing as bright, circular disc.

Distant past cultures all over the world had given names to full moons based on  the behavior of weather, animals and plants during that month.

The names of full Moons.

  1. JANUARY – WOLF MOON

This name is given to January full Moon based on the howling of wolves with hunger lamenting the severe winter scarcity of food. The other names for this full Moon are Old Moon and Ice Moon.

  1. FEBRUARY – SNOW MOON.

As the February weather in North America is cold and snowy, this full Moon of February got its name Snow Moon. Other name for this full moon is Storm Moon.

  1. MARCH – WORM MOON.

This is the last full Moon of winter season. Native Americans call this Worm Moon, as the worm moves slowly that would appear in the ice covered ground.

  1. APRIL – PINK MOON.

April’s full moon name is given as Pink Moon by Northern native Americans after a species of early blooming wild flower.

  1. MAY – FLOWER MOON.

An abundant bloom of various plants in May gives its name the Flower Moon.

  1. JUNE – STRAWBERRY MOON.

Harvesting of Strawberries in North America takes place in June. Hence the June full Moon name Strawberry Moon.

  1. JULY – BUCK MOON.

Male Deer which shed their antlers every year begin to regrow them in this month. Hence, July full Moon is Buck Moon.

  1. AUGUST – STURGEON MOON.

Fishing tribes in North America has given August full Moon the Sturgeon Moon because of abundant availability of species in August.

  1. SEPTEMBER – HARVEST MOON.

This is a familiar full Moon that comes in September at the time of autumn equinox when crops are collected. It also refers to Moon’s bright appearance and early rise enabling farmers continue harvesting into night.

  1. OCTOBER – HUNTER’S MOON.

The full Moon that comes in October is the Hunter’s Moon to hunt fattened deer unable to hide now in bare fields.this Moon is also bright and long in the sky giving hunters an opportunity to hunt at night.

  1. NOVEMBER – BEAVER MOON.

This November full Moon name had come from native Americans setting beaver traps in this month.

  1. DECEMBER – COLD MOON.

The coming of winter has got December’s full Moon named Cold Moon.
